Loading...Campan in Leogane, Haiti, has a new mule thanks to a yard sale at St. Luke, Knoxville. In May, the church raised $655 (29,500 gourdes) for the Children’s Nutrition Program of Haiti (CNP) which has a clinic in the community.
Dawn Adkins, a St. Luke member who has been working with the CNP, sent word to the church about the purchase.
The community is “way up in the mountains and cars and trucks cannot go there,” Adkins said. “CNP has a mobile PTA clinic there but the only way to get the Plumpy Nut (the foil packets of medicated peanut butter food supplements for malnutrition) there is to use a mule to carry them. The monitrice (CNP community education worker) had a mule (that was donated a while back by another church, I think) but the mule died. So, there has been a terrible time trying to get the Plumpy Nut to the kids who need it. The monitrice has had to borrow a mule from another community member and it’s been a hassle.”
Adkins gave the CNP Operations Manager Yvon Jean Mahatma 29,500 gourdes from St. Luke to buy the mule. “She/he is beautiful!” Adkins said. “She/he can carry the Plumpy Nut!”
There were some funds left after the purchase of the mule, so an external hard drive and case were bought for CNP and the remainder was given to montrice Neglitha, who will use the extra money to care for the mule. Neglitha sent her thanks along to St. Luke.
Yvon Mahatma said in a Facebook post, “Thank you for your church may have contributed to the love of the heart, helping the children of my country, because the mule will carry "medikamanba" for kilometers (47kms) to save the lives of children.”
Adkins said, “I am happy about St. Luke’s contribution. I know this mule will greatly aid the efforts to treat malnutrition in the Campan area.”
