Our hearts, tears and prayers go out to the people of Connecticut in the aftermath of the terrible shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School today. Please hold the school, students, teachers, counselors, families, and parents, especially the parents of the children who died in your prayers.
The bishops of the Diocese of Connecticut are on their way Newtown/Sandy Hook to be of whatever assistance they can. Please also keep them and all the clergy in your prayers.
Our children have already heard, or will undoubtedly hear, about the shooting. The National Association of School Psychologists has a guide that we think may be helpful to you in answering questions and quelling fears. The guide is titled, “Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers;” it may be found here /digital_faith/documents/3168494
Almighty God, we ask that you look with loving-kindness on the people of our nation, and especially those in Connecticut, as we struggle to live our lives in time of great uncertainty and fear. Grant that those who would terrorize and do violence against the people of our world may be thwarted, and that in these times of trouble all of every faith, race and ethnicity may be drawn yet more closely in bonds of shared amity, respect, and purpose.
Give peace, comfort, and healing to those families who have lost loved ones, and in this holy season, give us all a sense of your abiding presence and peace. We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
