Loading...St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Maryville, honored Dick Cox for his more than 20 years of mentoring the Education for Ministry program at the church with a reception following Eucharist on Dec. 20 in the church's Great Hall.
Cox started the EfM program more than 20 years ago and has been its mentor since its inception. EfM is a four-year study of the Old and New Testaments, church history and social issues which is designed to help participants discover and develop their own personal ministries. The program is operated through the Bleecken Center at the University of the South.
For over 20 years he has worked with students each week, guiding them in their Bible study and helping them learn to think theologically.
Cox is a long-time member of St. Andrew’s and served as one of its first acolytes when the church first moved into its present structure on Maryville’s main thoroughfare in the early 1940’s. He left Maryville for several years as part of his work with the Aluminum Company of America, including time in Iowa and Australia. He and his late wife, Anne, returned to Maryville and St. Andrew’s in the 1960’s. He has served in almost every capacity at the church, including four terms as senior warden (most recently in 2014). He recalls working on the vacuum cleaner motor which powered the church’s first organ.
Mentors of other EfM classes in the area were also invited to attend the event.
